Dishwasher components: complete guide

Written by Editorial board | Jun 21, 2024 7:00:00 AM

One of the essential household appliances in modern homes is, of course, the dishwasher. Designed to automate dishwashing , this appliance not only saves a considerable amount of time, but also ensures more hygienic and efficient cleaning with respect to manual washing.                                                                         Several types of domestic dishwashers are present on the market: the most common are built-in dishwashers, designed specifically to be installed under the kitchen counter. For those, however, who do not have sufficient space for this type of product or who move around a lot, there are two alternatives: portable dishwashers, free-standing units that can be moved around the kitchen on wheels and also used as a worktop, and countertop dishwashers, smaller, more compact units that can be placed on the kitchen counter. Regardless of the type chosen, however, all models function similarly and consist of a number of basic components and functional and aesthetically pleasing lighting components. Let us go over them in this article.

The essential parts of the dishwasher

A dishwasher is a complex appliance that uses several components to perform its cleaning functions.

The tank is the compartment where plates, glasses and cutlery are placed, while the water tank contains the water required for the washing cycle.
Once heated, the water, alongside the detergent, circulates inside the machine thanks to the electric motor that powers the circulation pump, located at the bottom of the dishwasher and connected directly to the water mains and drain. There are two main pump models:

  • reversible – generally mounted vertically, this type switches between pumping water to the wash/spray arms and pumping water to the drain by reversing the direction of the motor;
  • direct guide – generally mounted horizontally, this type features a motor that runs only in one direction, from the arms to the drain pipe.

The pump, therefore, is designed to direct the water from the wash arms onto the dishes, and lastly into the drain pipe. Certain models, in addition to these, also feature spray arms, which are designed to ensure deeper and more thorough cleaning of the dishes.
The dispenser, usually located on one side of the door, is designed to dispense detergent at the appropriate time during the wash cycle, while the filter captures food residue to prevent potential clogging of the circulation pump.
Successful washing is also guaranteed by a whole series of valves. The supply valve opens and closes continuously in order to allow the correct amount of water to enter during the cycle, while the inlet valve monitors the flow. Once dishwashing is complete, the water leaves the tank thanks to the synchronised work of the impeller with the drain valve, the latter usually connected to a drain pipe

Electrical dishwasher components

Today, innovation in domestic dishwashers focuses on the balance between high washing performance and reduced electricity and water consumption. This path is supported by the digitisation of washing processes and user integration. Advanced components and smart devices improve functionality and efficient washing management by means of electronic solutions. In fact, the dishwasher is equipped with several electrical components that ensure efficiency and effectiveness. Among these, certainly the most important is the control panel, considered the actual brain of the machine, as it manages all functions and washing cycles via a series of buttons or touch screens available for the user to customise as they please.
Although the functions offered differ depending on the model selected, in most cases, the touchpad includes at least:

  • an on/off button;
  • a start and pause button;
  • a “mode” button, which allows you to select the cycle or any special operating modes;
  • arrows to control the water temperature;
  • a numerical LED screen.

The dishwasher also includes other electrical components, such as the motor, which powers the circulation pump, the timer to determine the duration of all stages of the procedure and temperature and water level sensors. In particular, the heating element, which is located at the base of the tank, heats water to the temperature required for washing and rinsing operations and, in certain cases, also the air for drying operations. The thermostat adjusts the temperature before a cycle starts and the solenoid valve adjusts the flow.

Internal and external dishwasher components

The interior and exterior components of the dishwasher include all visible and non-visible parts that contribute to its daily operation.
Inside, there are the baskets and racks, where plates, glasses, cutlery and other utensils are placed while the latest and most complex models also feature expanding racks for glasses, a lower basket for metal or heat-resistant dishware and an upper basket for porcelain items.
Spray nozzles are also included, located on the washing arms, which spray water at high pressure and, in certain cases, a safety lock is also provided that automatically seals the door when the dishwasher is running, preventing anyone, especially children, from opening it. The salt compartment is used to regenerate the resin in the water softener, while gaskets ensure the door is watertight during operation.
The door is the front part that opens to load and unload the dishwasher.
