In the panorama of customised solutions in the lighting sector, we find so-called illuminated signs. This refers to those signage elements, mainly related to the commercial sector, to identify a specific activity (e.g. shops, bars, pharmacies) or to represent the logo of a company, usually applied to walls or flags.
Illuminated signs were one of the first "tools" for advertising and territorial marketing. Over time they have evolved in terms of materials, size and light source, as well as in terms of design. From neon signs to LED signs right up to the backlighting for illuminated signs.
In this article we will explore these types of lighting solutions and specifically talk about:

The LED illuminated sign is a device consisting of a plastic, aluminium or metal case with a standard or SMD LED source inside.
LED signs are high-performance ecological solutions and have many advantages over the classic neon sign. First of all, the degree of brightness: the LED modules guarantee a light emission over the entire surface without dispersion. In addition, LEDs save a lot of energy and therefore money. It is well known that LED sources are characterised by low energy consumption and longer service life. One of the advantages of this technology is its safety: LED signs, working at low voltage, offer high safety standards that are not found in neon solutions.
There are various types of LED signs depending on the configuration required. Programmable LED signs are particularly popular in the advertising sector.
These are real electronic devices that can be programmed to convey written information and images. In this case, we are talking about a more complex configuration than a classic illuminated sign, in fact, we are talking about instruments composed of LED displays that are assembled together with a specific purpose, which is not only to illuminate a written message.
As with signage, backlighting projects used to be realised through the use of neon lamps, which were characterised by their large size. Today, LED backlighting consists of one or more LED modules that are placed inside the compartment of the application to be illuminated.
The main difference between LED backlighting and signage lies in the fact that, in addition to being applicable to illuminated signs, backlighting is a lighting solution that can be used for a variety of applications in different areas and sectors. From household appliances in the food equipment sector to the civil lighting sector, there are many custom LED backlighting projects carried out by SLIM. For example, the ILVE Panoramagic oven knob backlighting project, or the Hager switch backlighting solution.
SLIM offers a high level of expertise and know-how in the field of backlighting.
Primarily used for the aesthetic function of a light profile, this technique can also be applied to devices and applications with a functional purpose. Thanks to the use of RGB and RGBW technology, the illuminated object can be given a different colour in order to indicate a specific status of the device.
SLIM is at its customers' disposal for the research and study of a plastic case and the most suitable light source for the development of a customised backlighting solution that is unique.
